MMSF Board member Dr. Michael West receives Charles Drake Medal

Dr. Michael West (BSc Med, MD, PhD) has been named the recipient of the 2026 Canadian Neurosurgical Society Lifetime Achievement Award – also known as the Charles Drake Medal.
A distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Surgery at the Max Rady College of Medicine, Dr. West has been on the MMSF Board since 2020 and is chair of the Nominating Committee.
The prestigious Charles Drake Medal recognizes a senior neurosurgeon for their internationally recognized work in the field of neurosurgery and participation in the development of neurosurgical research and/or education in Canada.
As a clinical neurosurgeon and basic science researcher, Dr. West has authored numerous papers and conducted cooperative research studies. His expertise includes brain aneurysms, pituitary and skull base tumours and Gamma Knife radiosurgery.
He was responsible for starting Canada’s first Gamma Knife program, which opened at Health Sciences Centre in 2003 – revolutionizing neurosurgery to the benefit of thousands of Manitobans.
He has held leadership roles including associate dean for Postgraduate Medical Education and remained actively involved in medical education and mentoring, with interests in supporting emerging scientists and the impact of aging on medical practice.
Dr. West received the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012, the Doctors Manitoba Distinguished Service Award in 2014, the Order of Manitoba in 2019 and the Order of Canada (CM) in 2022. He was named Professor Emeritus at the University of Manitoba in 2022.
